Northport ZIP Codes: Complete Guide to 35473, 35475 and 35476

Northport has three ZIP codes: 35473, 35475 and 35476. All three are standard street-delivery codes with Northport as the USPS primary city name. Which Northport, AL ZIP code applies depends on the street address. 35476 covers the compact area around historic downtown and City Hall. 35473 covers the area to the northwest toward Coker. 35475 is the large northern code that reaches into lake and rural country. Northport has no PO-box-only ZIP code of its own.

This guide compares the three codes, explains how the Northport Post Office fits in, and shows why a Northport mailing address does not prove that a property is inside the City of Northport.

Northport AL ZIP code list at a glance

Directory listings and the USPS Office of Inspector General agree on the basic setup. The table below sets the three codes side by side. Population and land-area figures describe the Census Bureau’s ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs), which are statistical approximations of ZIP codes, not official USPS boundaries.

Together the three ZCTAs hold an estimated 47,464 people. The 2020 Census counted 31,125 residents in the city of Northport, according to U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts. The gap of roughly 16,000 people is the clearest sign that the Northport ZIP code area reaches well beyond city limits into unincorporated Tuscaloosa County and, in a few places, into the City of Tuscaloosa. The two figures come from different surveys and years, so treat the comparison as an order of magnitude, not an exact count.

What each code covers

  • 35476 is the smallest by land but the most central. It includes historic downtown Northport along Main Avenue, the Kentuck Art Center at 503 Main Ave, Northport City Hall at 3500 McFarland Blvd, DCH Northport Medical Center at 2700 Hospital Dr and the riverfront River Run Park. The 35476 ZIP code guide covers it in detail.
  • 35473 sits northwest of 35476, between Coker’s 35452 and Tuscaloosa’s 35406 on the Census map. It is mostly residential and includes Faucett Brothers Park, Sokol Park South on Watermelon Road and the Sharpes Landing boat launch on Lake Tuscaloosa. See the guide to ZIP code 35473.
  • 35475 covers most of the northern half of the map, including parts of the Lake Tuscaloosa shoreline, Binion Creek Landing, and both Northside High School and Tuscaloosa County High School. Read the 35475 area guide for its communities and schools.

All 14 school campuses counted in the table belong to the Tuscaloosa County School System (TCSS). No Tuscaloosa City Schools campus has a Northport ZIP code.

The Northport Post Office and the Coker connection

A third-party ZIP directory lists the Northport Post Office at 4200 McFarland Blvd, Northport, AL 35476. County address records confirm that this address exists inside Northport, but this guide could not confirm the post office listing on the USPS locator, so check USPS Find Locations for current services and hours.

A September 2024 audit by the USPS Office of Inspector General says the Northport delivery unit serves four ZIP codes: 35452, 35473, 35475 and 35476. It lists 13 city routes and 19 rural routes and estimates about 51,061 people served, roughly 64 percent urban and 36 percent rural. The first of those codes, 35452, belongs to the Town of Coker, not Northport. The Coker ZIP code 35452 guide explains why shared carriers do not make Coker part of Northport.

Directories list three spellings to avoid for these codes: “N Port,” “North Port” and “Nport.” Write “Northport, AL” with the five-digit code, or use the USPS ZIP Code Lookup to get the full ZIP+4.

A short history behind the Northport name

The Encyclopedia of Alabama says settlers arrived around 1813, and by 1816 the area was called Kentuck or Canetuck, probably for stands of river cane. The town grew at an easy crossing of the Black Warrior River and was called North Port for its place on the north bank. The name Northport became official in 1832, the same year a post office and ferry opened. The town incorporated in 1871 and has a mayor-council government.

The old name survives in the Kentuck Art Center, which grew out of a 1971 festival held for the centennial of incorporation. The historic downtown Northport guide covers the district, the arts center and the walkable streets around Main Avenue.

Northport ZIP code vs. Northport city limits

“Northport, AL” on an envelope is a postal city name. It does not decide which government serves a property. Tuscaloosa County’s address data, which records both the postal city and the incorporated municipality for each address point, shows several mismatches in the Northport ZIP codes:

  • Sokol Park South, 5901 Watermelon Rd, carries a Northport 35473 mailing address, but county address data places it inside Tuscaloosa city limits. Nearby addresses on the same road switch between the two cities.
  • Northside Middle School (19130 Northside Pkwy) and Walker Elementary (13051 Northside Rd) have Northport 35475 addresses but fall in unincorporated Tuscaloosa County.
  • Huntington Place Elementary uses “Tuscaloosa, AL 35475” in its school website footer, while the district lists Northport, which shows how loosely city names get used.
  • Tuscaloosa National Airport lies north of the river next to Northport, but it is City of Tuscaloosa property inside Tuscaloosa city limits, and its city mailing address is 7601 Robert Cardinal Airport Rd, Tuscaloosa 35401.

The full explanation is in the article on mailing addresses vs. city limits.

How to check whether an address is inside Northport

  1. Open Tuscaloosa County Public Works’ Planning and City Limits map. Northport supplies its own city-limits layer. The county labels the map general reference, not survey grade.
  2. For a single address, the county’s unified 911 address points layer lists the postal city, ZIP and incorporated municipality.
  3. Confirm with the City of Northport through northportal.gov or City Hall at 3500 McFarland Blvd, Northport, AL 35476 (205-339-7000), especially before relying on the answer for taxes, permits or utilities.

Reading a Northport AL ZIP code map

On the Census ZCTA map, 35475 dominates the northern half, 35473 is a mid-sized wedge to its south and west, and 35476 is a small strip along the north bank of the Black Warrior River opposite Tuscaloosa’s 35401. The Tuscaloosa and Northport ZIP code map explainer shows the shapes and explains why ZCTA outlines are only approximations. Large features cross the lines: Lake Tuscaloosa touches 35406, 35473 and 35475.

Schools and a Northport ZIP code

School campuses with Northport addresses are TCSS schools, but a school’s ZIP code does not tell you who attends it. Attendance zones follow the street address. TCSS’s Find My School Zone & Bus Route tool gives the assigned schools for a home. The guide to Tuscaloosa and Northport school zones explains why ZIP codes are not enough.
