A ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) is the Census Bureau’s approximation of a ZIP code, built from census blocks. It is not the USPS delivery boundary, so the area and population figures are estimates. They still show the contrast within Northport: 35476 covers about 5.5 square miles, compared with roughly 25 for 35473 and 215 for 35475.

Where the 35476 ZIP code sits

On the Census ZCTA map, 35476 is a small area along the north bank of the river, directly across from Tuscaloosa’s 35401. The larger 35473 area lies to its north and west, and Tuscaloosa’s 35406 covers the north-bank areas to the east. The ZIP code map guide explains how to read these shapes, and the overview of Northport’s three ZIP codes compares 35476 with 35473 and 35475.

Northport grew around an easy river crossing. The Encyclopedia of Alabama says the area was settled around 1813, took the name North Port for its position on the north bank, and was incorporated in 1871. That early town is the core of today’s 35476.

Neighborhoods and historic districts

Two areas in 35476 have formal names on the National Register of Historic Places:

  • Northport Historic District (listed 1980). Its boundary description covers 25th, 26th, 28th and 30th Avenues and Main, 5th and 6th Streets. This area is usually called Historic Downtown Northport. In county 911 address data, every Main Avenue and Park Street address point is in 35476. Some 30th Avenue points fall in 35473, so the district’s edges may not all share one ZIP.
  • East Northport Historic District (listed 2004), roughly bounded by 20th Street, 8th Avenue, Rice Mine Road and Bridge Avenue. Its ZIP code has not been verified at the parcel level.

Outside these districts, this guide does not assign informal neighborhood names, because no official source checked for this collection defines them. For a street-by-street look at the downtown arts district, see the Historic Downtown Northport guide.

Main streets, bridges and orientation

Northport City Hall is at 3500 McFarland Blvd. ALDOT plans to replace the Woolsey Finnell Bridge, so check ALDOT for current construction status.
  • Lurleen B. Wallace Boulevard (US 43/AL-69). From the north end of I-359 in downtown Tuscaloosa, US 43 and AL-69 cross the Hugh R. Thomas Bridge (1974) and continue into Northport as Lurleen B. Wallace Boulevard.
  • Main Avenue and Park Street. These are the historic downtown streets, home to Kentuck Art Center (503 Main Ave) and the Northport Visitor Center & Heritage Museum (1991 Park St).
  • Rice Mine Road. It runs along the north bank toward the Paul W. Bryant Bridge, which is entirely within Tuscaloosa, and toward Lake Tuscaloosa.
