Tuscaloosa Northport school zones are set by two separate public school districts, Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS) and the Tuscaloosa County School System (TCSS), and neither district draws its attendance zones along ZIP code lines. A Tuscaloosa ZIP code does not mean a home is zoned for a city school, and a Northport ZIP code does not tell you which county school a child would attend. The only reliable answer comes from entering the exact home address into the district’s own lookup tool and confirming the result with the district.
This guide explains how each district assigns students, why ZIP codes, city limits and school zones disagree, how magnet, charter, private and virtual options work outside the zone system, and what to check before buying or renting a home.
Two districts, two ways of assigning schools
Tuscaloosa and Northport are served by two public school systems that operate independently. Each has its own schools, its own zone maps and its own lookup tool. Because both districts run schools with Tuscaloosa addresses, the city name and ZIP on an envelope cannot tell you which district covers a property.
Tuscaloosa City Schools: the TCS zoning map
Tuscaloosa City Schools publishes an address-based zoning map page that links to an ArcGIS tool called the TCS Zoning Map. The district’s instructions are short:
- Enter your address at the top left corner of the screen and press Enter.
- Click the small blue box on your address.
- A box appears showing the elementary, middle and high school zones for that address.
For questions, the page lists the TCS Director of Student Services at 205-759-3502. The tool gives no accuracy disclaimer, but a map result is still worth confirming with the district before you rely on it.
TCS also publishes feeder patterns, which show how elementary schools lead into middle and high schools. Central, MLK Jr., Oakdale and University Place elementary schools feed Westlawn Middle and Central High. Arcadia, Skyland, Southview and Woodland Forrest feed Eastwood Middle and Paul W. Bryant High. The Alberta School of Performing Arts (TASPA), Verner and Rock Quarry feed Northridge Middle and Northridge High, though the same page notes that TASPA’s grades 6–8 are application-only and not part of the feeder pattern.
Tuscaloosa County School System: Infofinder
The county district’s Student Services page states the basic rule: a student must attend the school in the zone where the parent or guardian has established legal residence. TCSS uses Infofinder, its bus-routing software, to let families look up school zones, bus routes and bus stops by home address. The district’s “Find My School Zone & Bus Route” link opens the tool; enter the home address there.
For zone questions, TCSS lists Sara Young, administrative assistant, at sdyoung@tcss.net. The transportation office is 205-342-2636, and the district’s main line is 205-758-0411.
Why Tuscaloosa Northport school zones don’t follow ZIP codes
ZIP codes are drawn by the Postal Service to organize mail delivery. City limits are set by annexation. School district lines and attendance zones are set by school boards. These are three independent systems, so their borders cross each other constantly. The guide to Tuscaloosa mailing addresses vs. city limits covers the postal and municipal side in more depth. Local school addresses show how often the layers disagree:
- County schools inside Tuscaloosa ZIPs. Holt Elementary and Holt High have Tuscaloosa 35404 addresses, and county address data places them inside Tuscaloosa city limits, yet they belong to TCSS. Hillcrest High, Hillcrest Middle, Englewood Elementary and Taylorville Primary are TCSS schools with Tuscaloosa 35405 addresses, while TCS runs Skyland, Southview and Woodland Forrest elementary schools in the same ZIP. The schools located in 35404 and schools in ZIP code 35405 pages list both districts side by side.
- A school with two city names. Huntington Place Elementary, a TCSS school at 11601 Huntington Place, shows “Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35475” in its website footer, while the district directory lists its city as Northport. ZIP 35475 is a Northport postal code.
- No city schools in Northport ZIPs. TCS has no school campuses in 35473, 35475 or 35476. Every public school with an address in those ZIPs belongs to TCSS. See the directory of schools in 35475 for the largest group.
- 35406 has only city campuses but is not all city-zoned. Every public school with a 35406 address belongs to TCS, but a mailing ZIP is not a district boundary, and 35406 extends well beyond the built-up city toward Lake Tuscaloosa. Don’t assume a 35406 home is city-zoned; run the address through both tools. The schools in 35406 page explains this in detail.
- The reverse also happens. TCS’s Paul W. Bryant High and Eastwood Middle publish Cottondale 35453 addresses on their own sites, while some district pages show Tuscaloosa 35405. A Cottondale postal name doesn’t move a school out of the city district, and county address data places both campuses inside Tuscaloosa city limits.
A school “located in” a ZIP code is not the same as a school “serving” that ZIP. Children living across the street from a campus may be zoned somewhere else, and a zone can cover parts of several ZIP codes.
Options outside the attendance zone system
Several public and private options admit students through applications rather than home zones. Admission rules change, so treat this section as orientation and check each program’s official page each year.
TCS magnet and specialty programs
TCS’s specialty schools page lists five application-based programs: Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools–Elementary (grades 1–5), Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools–Middle (grades 6–8), The Alberta School of Performing Arts (grades 6–8), the Central High School IB Program (grades 9–12) and the Tuscaloosa Fine Arts Academy at Bryant High School (grades 9–12). Applications go through the district’s specialty-program portal; check the page each winter for the current window.
The Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools admission policy says applicants must live in a TCS zone, including private-school and homeschooled students who live in a zone. It sets an overall score threshold of 73% and describes score-based selection by sending school rather than a lottery. Audition and admission details for TASPA and the Fine Arts Academy were not published in a form that could be verified, so contact those schools directly.
Alternative and special programs
Some district sites are not neighborhood schools. TCSS Academy (3801 Alabama Ave. NE, 35404) houses the county’s Alternative Learning program for grades 6–12, GRAD Academy and Global Pathways. The Lloyd Wood Education Center in Northport (35476) lists the Sprayberry Center, Pre-K, GRAD Academy and ELEVATE programs. Placement in these programs is handled by the district, not by home address alone.
Public charter school
I Dream Big Charter School is a public charter school authorized by the Alabama Public Charter School Commission and located on the Stillman College campus at 3601 Stillman Blvd., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401. Its official site lists grades 6–9 for enrollment. As a charter, it enrolls through its own process, separate from TCS and TCSS attendance zones. The Tuscaloosa college campus ZIP codes guide explains how it shares the Stillman address.
Private schools and virtual school
Private schools such as The Capitol School, American Christian Academy, Holy Spirit Catholic School, Tuscaloosa Academy and North River Christian Academy set their own admissions and have no attendance zones. TCSS also runs Legends Virtual Academy, an online public school with no physical campus. The address on its pages is the TCSS central office, not a school building.
A checklist for families comparing houses
Because Tuscaloosa Northport school zones are tied to individual addresses, the check has to be repeated for every property on your list.
- Get the exact street address. A ZIP code, subdivision name or “near” description isn’t enough.
- Run the address through both tools. Use the TCS Zoning Map and TCSS Infofinder. If one returns nothing, the other district may cover it.
- Call or email the district. Ask the district to confirm the zone in writing for that address.
- Save the confirmation. Keep a screenshot of the map result and the district’s reply with the date.
- Check again before closing or signing. Zones and feeder patterns can be revised by school boards, so recheck close to your move.
- Ask about enrollment documents. Each district sets its own proof-of-residence requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Tuscaloosa address mean Tuscaloosa City Schools?
No. County schools such as Holt and Hillcrest have Tuscaloosa addresses. Check the exact address in both districts’ tools.
Are all Northport ZIP codes in the county school system?
All public school campuses with 35473, 35475 or 35476 addresses belong to TCSS. Individual homes should still be checked in Infofinder to find the assigned school.
Can I use the school zones to guarantee enrollment?
No lookup result guarantees enrollment. Each district decides eligibility and may require proof of residence.
Where can I see which schools are located in each ZIP code?
The seven ZIP directories, starting with schools located in 35401, list campuses by physical address. Use them to see what’s nearby, then use the zone tools to see what’s assigned.
