Tuscaloosa Mailing Addresses vs. City Limits: Why They Differ

A Tuscaloosa mailing address does not prove a property is inside the City of Tuscaloosa, and a Northport mailing address does not prove a property is inside Northport. The question of Tuscaloosa mailing address vs city limits comes down to this: the U.S. Postal Service assigns ZIP codes and city names to move mail efficiently, while city limits are legal boundaries set by annexation. The two were never designed to match.

Two more layers sit on top of those: the school district and the school attendance zone. This guide explains each layer, shows real local examples where they split apart, and lists the official tools for checking a specific address.

The four layers behind every local address

Each layer answers a different question and is kept by a different organization. Mixing them up is the most common source of confusion for people moving to the area.

Layer 1: ZIP code and mailing city

A ZIP code is a delivery tool. USPS draws routes around post offices and carriers, not around city halls. The city name printed on the last line of an address is the name USPS associates with that ZIP code, so many homes outside a city’s legal boundary still receive mail addressed to “Tuscaloosa, AL” or “Northport, AL.” For a closer look at how these postal areas are drawn, see the guide to reading the Tuscaloosa and Northport ZIP code map.

Layer 2: City limits

City limits are legal boundaries. Whether a property is inside them determines which local government is responsible for it. The City of Tuscaloosa’s FAQ adds one more wrinkle: its police jurisdiction extends three miles beyond the city limits. That means some properties outside the city can still fall under certain city functions, which is one more reason a ZIP code cannot answer the question for you.

Layer 3: School district

Tuscaloosa County has two separate public school systems. Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS) is the city district. The Tuscaloosa County School System (TCSS) is a different district with its own board, central office and schools, and its schools include every public school campus in the three Northport ZIP codes. They are not branches of one system, and a Tuscaloosa ZIP code does not place a home in TCS.

Layer 4: Attendance zone

Within a district, each address is zoned for particular schools. Two houses in the same ZIP code can be zoned for different elementary schools, or even for different districts. The explainer on Tuscaloosa and Northport school zones covers how zoning, magnet programs and transfers work.

Local examples of Tuscaloosa mailing address vs city limits

These examples come from official school and university pages. They show how often the layers disagree.

County schools with Tuscaloosa ZIP codes

Holt Elementary School (1001 Crescent Ridge Road NE) and Holt High School (301 44th Court NE) both carry Tuscaloosa, AL 35404 addresses, but both belong to the Tuscaloosa County School System, not Tuscaloosa City Schools. Tuscaloosa County’s 911 address data places both campuses inside Tuscaloosa city limits, so these are city-limits addresses served by the county district. The same is true in 35405, where Hillcrest High School (300 Patriot Parkway), Hillcrest Middle School and Taylorville Primary School are TCSS schools with Tuscaloosa addresses. Meanwhile, Tuscaloosa City Schools operates Skyland, Southview and Woodland Forrest elementary schools in that same ZIP. The directory of schools located in 35405 lists both districts side by side.

A school with two city names

Huntington Place Elementary School, a TCSS school at 11601 Huntington Place, shows “Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35475” in its own website footer, while the district’s directory lists its city as Northport. ZIP 35475 is a Northport ZIP code. Neither printed city name settles the question on its own; the county’s 911 address data places this campus inside Northport city limits, while nearby Northside Middle and Walker Elementary, also 35475 Northport addresses, fall in unincorporated county. See the schools in ZIP code 35475 for the rest of that area.

A city-district example runs the other way. Paul W. Bryant High School belongs to Tuscaloosa City Schools, yet its own website uses a Cottondale, AL 35453 address, while some district pages show Tuscaloosa 35405. A Cottondale postal name does not remove a school from the city district, and county 911 address data places both Bryant High and neighboring Eastwood Middle inside Tuscaloosa city limits.

Northport addresses inside Tuscaloosa

Two north-bank places show the reverse. Sokol Park South, at 5901 Watermelon Road, has a Northport 35473 mailing address, yet county address data places it inside Tuscaloosa city limits. Tuscaloosa National Airport, at 7601 Robert Cardinal Airport Road, sits north of the river beside Northport but uses a Tuscaloosa 35401 address and lies inside Tuscaloosa city limits.

University of Alabama: 35401 vs. 35487

The University of Alabama uses 35487 as its campus mailing ZIP. Its Office of the Registrar publishes a physical address of 801 Campus Drive W, 206 Student Services Center, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, but a mailing address of Box 870134, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0134. The visitor address and the mail address use different ZIP codes for the same office. The University of Alabama 35487 ZIP code guide explains campus mail formats.

Coker and the Northport post office

A September 2024 USPS Office of Inspector General report lists the Northport Post Office as serving ZIP codes 35452, 35473, 35475 and 35476. ZIP 35452 is associated with Coker, which is its own incorporated town with a mayor and council, incorporated in 1999, and its own post office. Northport carriers delivering mail there does not make those addresses part of Northport. The Coker 35452 guide covers that relationship, and the Northport ZIP codes guide covers 35473, 35475 and 35476.

Why the difference matters

Whether an address is inside city limits can affect which government provides services such as police response, garbage collection, zoning and permits, which local taxes and fees apply, and which municipal elections a resident votes in. The details depend on the property and change over time, so this guide does not attempt to list rates or service areas. Contact the City of Tuscaloosa, the City of Northport, or Tuscaloosa County directly to confirm what applies to a specific parcel.

Being outside city limits is not unusual or bad. It simply means a different set of offices handles certain questions. The key is to ask the right office.

How to check a specific address

  1. Confirm the ZIP code and mailing city with the USPS ZIP Code Lookup. This tells you only how mail is addressed.
  2. Check Tuscaloosa city limits with the city’s Zone Lookup, linked from the city’s “Am I in the city limits?” FAQ. You can also call Tuscaloosa 311 by dialing 311 inside the city or 205-248-5311 from outside.
  3. For Northport and other towns, open Tuscaloosa County Public Works’ Planning and City Limits map, which shows city limits supplied by Northport and Tuscaloosa and by the county for other towns. The county calls it a general reference, not survey grade, so confirm the result with the City of Northport through northportal.gov or City Hall at 3500 McFarland Blvd. (205-339-7000).
  4. Check the county address record. The county’s unified 911 address points layer lists each address’s postal city, ZIP code and the incorporated municipality, if any, it falls inside. It is county 911 data, not a USPS record.
  5. Look up the parcel in the Tuscaloosa County Tax Assessor’s parcel GIS. The county Mapping Department is at the County Courthouse, 714 Greensboro Ave., Room 108.
  6. Check the school district and zone. Try the TCS Zoning Map first. If the address is not in a city school zone, use TCSS’s Infofinder by entering the home address. Confirm the result with the district before enrolling.

If you only need the correct ZIP code, the step-by-step guide to finding the right ZIP code for a Tuscaloosa or Northport address is the faster route.

Frequently asked questions

If my address says Tuscaloosa, am I in the city limits?

Not necessarily. The Tuscaloosa mailing address vs city limits distinction means the postal city name only reflects USPS delivery. Use the city’s Zone Lookup or call 311 to confirm.

Does a Tuscaloosa ZIP code mean my child attends Tuscaloosa City Schools?

No. Tuscaloosa City Schools and the Tuscaloosa County School System are separate districts, and both operate schools with Tuscaloosa addresses in 35404 and 35405. Check the official zoning tools for the exact address.

What is Tuscaloosa’s police jurisdiction?

According to the city’s FAQ, the police jurisdiction covers a three-mile area beyond the city limits. Being inside it is not the same as being inside the city.

Is Coker part of Northport?

No. Coker is an incorporated town. The Northport Post Office serves ZIP 35452, but that is a postal arrangement, not a municipal one.
