Tuscaloosa and Northport Parks by ZIP Code

This Tuscaloosa-Northport parks by ZIP code directory lists public parks using each park’s published address and the agency that runs it. Parks in the seven standard ZIP codes (35401, 35404, 35405 and 35406 in Tuscaloosa; 35473, 35475 and 35476 in Northport) are run by four different kinds of operators, and the operator often matters more than the ZIP when you need hours, rentals or rules.

Descriptions here are deliberately short. For history and context, follow the links to each ZIP code’s landmarks page.

Who runs the parks

  • PARA is the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority (tcpara.org). It runs parks on both sides of the river, including several with Northport addresses. A PARA park is not automatically a City of Tuscaloosa park.
  • City of Tuscaloosa park venues, such as the Riverwalk and neighborhood parks, are listed by the City’s Arts and Entertainment department at liveplaytuscaloosa.com. The City’s Lakes Division manages its reservoirs.
  • City of Northport maintains the riverfront levee trail, and River Run Park’s official site lists City of Northport contacts.
  • The State of Alabama runs Lake Lurleen State Park, just outside the core ZIPs in Coker.

Sokol Park North is a conflict case. PARA’s park page lists 6198 Watermelon Rd, Tuscaloosa 35406, but a PARA shelter listing gives Northport 35473, and county address records show neighboring addresses on that road mailing as Northport 35473. Confirm with USPS before relying on either. Lake Nicol and Harris Lake are City of Tuscaloosa reservoirs in north Tuscaloosa with no officially published street address or ZIP; the 35406 placement comes from third-party listings only. See community places in 35406.

Nearby: Coker 35452

Lake Lurleen State Park, 13226 Lake Lurleen Rd, Coker 35452, is run by Alabama State Parks. It is outside the seven core ZIPs, and county data places it inside the Town of Coker, not Northport.

Comparing parks across ZIP codes

A few patterns stand out when you line up Tuscaloosa-Northport parks by ZIP code:

  • Riverfront parks cluster in 35401 and 35476, facing each other across the Black Warrior River, with Randall Family Park (35406) on the north bank in Tuscaloosa.
  • Large sports complexes sit at the edges: Bowers and Newt Hinton in 35405, Sokol North and South on Watermelon Road, and River Run in 35476.
  • Lake access is spread across 35406, 35473 and 35475.
  • Northport-addressed parks are mostly county-run. Six of the ten places listed here with Northport addresses or locations are PARA parks; the rest belong to the City of Northport, the City of Tuscaloosa or the state.

A park address does not tell you the city

Park addresses are a good illustration of why a ZIP code and a city name can mislead. Sokol Park South mails as Northport 35473, yet the Tuscaloosa County unified 911 address data places 5901 Watermelon Road inside Tuscaloosa city limits. Montgomery Park mails as Northport but is coded unincorporated. That matters if you are asking which city’s police, permits or services apply. The full explanation is in our guide to mailing addresses versus city limits; to check a specific location, use the county Planning and City Limits map.

For current hours, pavilion rentals and field reservations, go straight to the operator: PARA for county parks, the City of Tuscaloosa for its venues, and the City of Northport or River Run Park’s own site for Northport facilities.
