Landmarks and Outdoor Places in the 35475 Postal Area

The landmarks in 35475 are mostly outdoors. This large Northport-area postal ZIP covers much of the countryside north of the City of Northport, including part of Lake Tuscaloosa’s shoreline. It has no historic downtown or museum district. Its verified public places are a state boat launch, two Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority (PARA) properties and a National Register–listed section of one of Alabama’s earliest roads. This guide lists each place, explains why it matters and notes which nearby attractions are outside the ZIP.

For readers who know Northport mainly through its riverfront and Kentuck Art Center, the distinction is important. Those places have 35476 addresses, not 35475. The 35475 area is better understood through its lake access and rural roads.

Byler Road is not in the table because its ZIP code has not been verified. The National Register places the listed section about 11 miles north of Northport, off U.S. 43, which suggests the 35475 area. This guide describes it as “north of Northport off US 43” rather than assigning a ZIP.

Lake Tuscaloosa: a reservoir across several ZIP codes

Lake Tuscaloosa is the main landmark people associate with this part of the county. It is a City of Tuscaloosa reservoir built by damming the North River and completed around 1970. Published figures put it at about 5,885 acres with roughly 177 miles of shoreline. The City describes it as the primary source of drinking water for Tuscaloosa. Its Lakes Division maintains the lake and requires permits for docks and other structures on City property along the shore.

The lake does not belong to one ZIP code. Shoreline addresses fall in the 35475, 35473 and 35406 postal areas, and the public launches are spread among them. Rock Quarry Landing is at 2230 New Watermelon Rd in Tuscaloosa 35406. Sharpes Landing is at the end of Sharpes Lake Road in the Northport 35473 mailing area. Binion Creek is the state launch in 35475. The Lake Tuscaloosa ZIP codes guide compares all three launches and explains shoreline addresses and permits.

Binion Creek Landing

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) lists three official public launches on Lake Tuscaloosa: Binion Creek (state) and Rock Quarry and Sharpes Landing (municipal). Binion Creek is the only one with a 35475 address. Sources disagree on the street number. Visit Tuscaloosa uses 16553 Binion Creek Heights, while another launch listing uses a U.S. 43 address. Both put it in Northport 35475.

The Tuscaloosa County 911 address data adds another layer. The 16553 Binion Creek Heights point is recorded inside Northport city limits, while the 16577 Highway 43 N point is recorded as unincorporated. This is a good example of why “Northport, AL 35475” does not settle which government has jurisdiction. For GPS, use the coordinates or directions on the operator’s or ADCNR’s current listing rather than a street number alone.

Carrolls Creek Island

PARA lists Carrolls Creek Island among its parks with the location “Lake Tuscaloosa, Northport, AL 35475” and no street address. PARA’s page does not describe amenities, access or rules. The name and location suggest it is reachable only by water, but that is an inference, not something PARA states. Call PARA at the number on its Carrolls Creek Island page before planning a visit.

Montgomery Park on Mormon Road

PARA lists Montgomery Park at 16780 Mormon Road, Northport, AL 35475. The county’s 911 address data records that point as unincorporated Tuscaloosa County, outside Northport city limits despite the Northport mailing address. The guide to mailing addresses versus city limits explains this kind of mismatch.

PARA’s Montgomery Park page gives few details. It notes that a storm shelter is available for public use and shows photos without captions. It does not list fields, trails or playground equipment, and this guide does not add amenities PARA has not published. The storm shelter is the park’s documented role for nearby residents. Check with PARA for current facilities.

Byler Road: Alabama’s early public road

Byler Road is the area’s main historic landmark. Two days after Alabama became a state in December 1819, the legislature authorized a toll road, and Gov. William Wyatt Bibb contracted with John Byler to build it. The Alabama Tourism Department says the road was completed in 1822 and ran about 140 miles from Courtland on the Tennessee River to Tuscaloosa on the Black Warrior River. Thousands of pioneers used it to move farther south and west. The Alabama Tourism Department calls it Alabama’s first public road and first state road.

The National Register of Historic Places listed a section of Byler Road on November 19, 1974. The listing places it “11 miles north of Northport, off U.S. Route 43.” Wikipedia describes the listed section as about half a mile long in Tuscaloosa County. Sources give different starting dates. The Encyclopedia of Alabama says 1850 and the state tourism office says the road was finished in 1822, so this guide does not settle on one. In 2023, legislators and the University of Alabama’s Center for Economic Development announced plans for historic markers and a scenic-trail designation along the route.

Byler Road is a public road, not a staffed historic site. There is no visitor center or admission. Treat it as a route to drive and respect private property along it.

Several places often mentioned with the 35475 area have addresses in other ZIP codes:

  • Lake Lurleen State Park is at 13226 Lake Lurleen Road, Coker, AL 35452. County 911 data places it inside the Town of Coker. Alabama State Parks runs it, and it reopened in April 2026 after renovation. See the Coker 35452 guide for that ZIP.

  • Kentuck Art Center, the Northport Historic District and Van de Graaff Arboretum & Historic Bridge Park all have 35476 addresses closer to the river. They are covered in the guide to historic places and landmarks in 35476.

Schools are the largest public buildings in 35475, with seven Tuscaloosa County School System campuses. They are not landmarks in the historic sense and are listed in the 35475 ZIP code guide and its school directory.

Practical notes for visiting landmarks in 35475

  • Check operators directly. PARA, ADCNR and the City of Tuscaloosa set hours, fees and rules. This guide does not print them because they change.
  • Lake rules come from the City. Lake Tuscaloosa is a drinking-water reservoir. Read the City of Tuscaloosa’s lakes page before boating, fishing or building anything on the shore.
  • Use coordinates for rural sites. Long rural house numbers and roads with several names can confuse navigation apps. Confirm locations on the operator’s map.
  • Expect long drives. The 35475 area covers roughly 215 square miles on the Census ZCTA map, so two places with the same ZIP code can be far apart.
